2008

Take off. Take a vacation. Take a break. Take flight. Get up and go.
These are a few well known phrases that we use in our daily lives when we talk about travel. We all want to “take” a break from the routine or simply get “up”, go and leave it all behind. To us, these two words–”up” and “take”–get across the idea of action, discovery and potential that comes along with planning travel.
We decided to change our name from Kango to UpTake.
We loved the name Kango for the positive energy it conveyed. However there were several other brands that had similar names Kaango Classifieds , Kangoo Shoes, Kangol Hats, Kango Wines, Kango Jack-Hammers and we felt this was just too confusing.
Also, we also wanted something that tied more directly to what we do. “Uptake,” as a common word, means quick understanding and comprehension; and gathering up of key facts. We want our new brand UpTake to convey our ability to gather, organize and deliver the web’s collective travel wisdom to help you make trip planning faster. That’s what resonated the most with private beta users, press and bloggers with the Kango.com private beta launch.
What’s going to happen to Kango.com?
Kango.com will still be available and identical to UpTake.com for some time. You may be redirected to one domain or the other during our transition period as we migrate content/databases etc. Don’t worry though, the site content will be the same, and your experience will be the same regardless of the domain name! (If you happen to be Googlebot or the Yahoo! Slurp crawler, our robots.txt on each site will aim to ensure that you don’t run into duplicate content.)
There is an explosion of user generated travel content on the Web, which is screaming out to be gathered up, organized, and made searchable so people can use it to plan better trips. I’m excited about the new name because this is exactly what UpTake is all about! Come visit us at http://www.uptake.com. Please start coming to UpTake and tell us what you think about our new brand! Our hope for you: that you get a great take on your next trip with UpTake.

Sounds good. However, I still love Kango which I think it’s a beautiful name.
“UpTaking” may be even better….easy to read, and easy to remember…
Anyway, best regards and good luck!

much prefer kango , uptake is not strong enough as a brand name. I think that you are making a mistake
Kango sounds like “can go” which is great for travel
Either way you have a nice product so wish you well in the new name
I have always liked Kango and am disappointed that you are changing it. The word “Kango” might not have tied directly to what you do, but you were chugging along so fast that YOU could have defined what you do all by yourself. You have done something unique and you named it Kango, and therefore YOU could have tied Kango to what you do. It was all in your hands and you seem to have given it up. I think you have second-guessed yourself!
I know you will be successful no matter what you name it, though. But do not be afraid to be number 1 and call the shots!
Besides, who had ever heard of Google, Yahoo, blog, or eBay before? These were folks who defined the meaning of what they do, not the other way around.
Reconsider.

Congrats on the new name!
UpTake is a good choice. And I echo the sentiments of others here, that you have a great product and the name will just support that.
(And I’m glad you kept the logo!)
I wasnt too attached to the original name but must admit that kango could have become the next kleenex. I think we just need to see more new everyday sentences that utilize the new flavor of ‘uptake’ for us to all better internalize it since it can work but probably easier for the newer audiences who never got used to the original name.
I love your new blog name. Great choice!
Uptake seems like a poor choice. I have no real idea what you do based on the name alone. For that reason, Kango stood out. It made me want to come and visit the site. I’m sure I won’t remember what Uptake does as soon as I leave your website.
If one of your managers makes a big blunder, is he the company Screw-Uptake?
LOVE the new name! Keep up the great work!
Re-branding is always tough, but sometimes necessary. The team at RE:INVENTION is behind UpTake and wish you much continued success.
I like the name. It was a smart move.
Mrs. Mecomber is nuts if she things that Yahoo, Google and eBay picked random words to “define” as their brand. “Yahoo” conveyed the excitement of finding something on the Internet. Google was bragging about the size of their Index. eBay was actually a regional play for the san francisco bay area at first. (And picked the dumbest name of the three.)
Google, by the way, was a rebrand. The original name they had was BackRub.
cool site , thanks
so great name ! i think this new name have more google and other search engins visitors. uptake can be a nice brand !
best regards
